Math just got a whole lot sweeter! This Gingerbread Cookie Counting interactive bulletin board is the perfect way to combine hands-on learning with holiday fun. This activity takes up hardly any floor space and, when not being used, makes an adorable seasonal display. When students are able to manipulate pieces and move their bodies, it makes learning more meaningful – and, more importantly, more fun!

Why Interactive Math Activities Matter
Repetition is important for retention in young students. A young child doesn’t seem to tire of hearing the same book or song three dozen times—they’re absorbing the information, and it’s helping them learn. That is why it is common to see students visit a center over and over again.
Hands-on experiences are just as important as repetition for young children. Touching, moving, and interacting with pieces helps make abstract ideas like numbers feel more concrete. Connecting counting to real-life situations, like checking if there are enough cookies for everyone at the table, strengthens understanding. Using math during play not only builds skills but also inspires a lifelong love of learning.
Young children need repeated, playful practice with counting and number recognition to build confidence and understanding. Activities like this make learning meaningful and fun!
Setting up the Gingerbread Cookie Counting Bulletin Board
For this activity, gather the following materials:
- Gingerbread Cookie Counting Interactive Bulletin Board set – all set to print and go!
- Push-pins
- Crayons, pencils, or markers for the recording sheets
- a basket to hold the supplies

Setting up this activity is as simple as setting up any other bulletin board. Start by printing out the pieces and laminating them for durability. Put the cookie sheets with the cookies up on the board – make sure to leave space for the other pieces to hang below each cookie sheet! For those number pieces, punch a hole in the top of each one and loop through a piece of string, a binder ring, or a pipe cleaner to create a loop. Place the recording sheets, writing materials, and number pieces into the basket, and it’s time to learn!

Students begin the activity by counting cookies on a cookie sheet. Next, they find the matching number in the basket and hang it under the correct cookie sheet. Finally, they record the number they counted on the recording sheet by tracing the number.
Enjoy ten more days of cookie fun!

Learning from All Angles – Vertical Surface Learning
Students working on a vertical surface benefit in multiple ways! Working on a vertical surface, such as a bulletin board, allows students to use large arm movements and improve their range of motion, strength, and flexibility in their upper limbs. Working in a kneeling or standing position improves core muscle strength and posture by encouraging the use of abdominal and back muscles to remain upright. Playing at a vertical surface will improve a child’s ability to cross the midline of their body as they use the entire surface, which improves brain coordination. Finally, it keeps children active while learning – standing, squatting, and reaching work different muscle groups and help get the wiggles out, too!
