It’s the most wonderful time of the year… for preschool gingerbread fun! From play dough to puzzles, these hands-on activities bring festive learning to life in any preschool classroom. Perfect for centers, circle time, or small group settings, these gingerbread-inspired ideas bring a festive twist to hands-on learning.

1. Preschool Gingerbread Play Dough
Crafting gingerbread-scented play dough adds a sensory twist to open-ended exploration. With rolling pins, cookie cutters, and pretend “decorating” materials like beads and buttons, children can shape and design their own gingerbread creations. Working with these materials strengthens and develops the fine motor muscles in preschooler’s hands, setting them up for success in activities such as writing and zipping their coats independently!

2. Preschool Gingerbread House Craft
Transforming a simple cardboard box into a gingerbread house is a delightful group project. This can be a completely DIY project using a large box and instructions on the internet, or buy a pre-made house to lighten the workload! With markers, paint, and craft supplies as inspiration, children can work together to decorate and bring their creative vision to life.
3. Cookie Shop Bakery Dramatic Play
Students love the dramatic play center – and this is no exception! Preschoolers engage in imaginary play with a cookie shop bakery setup. Pretend cookies, aprons, and a cash register encourage role-playing and support social skills development as children play and learn together!

4. Preschool Gingerbread Cookie Look-Alikes: Cinnamon Dough Ornaments
These sweet ornaments look like the real thing! Making cinnamon dough ornaments lets children roll, cut, and decorate festive keepsakes to take home. The process combines tactile learning with a memorable sensory experience. And, as a bonus, these ornaments smell amazing for years – so parents are grateful for the adorable memories, too!

5. Preschool Gingerbread Sensory Exploration
What IS gingerbread, anyway? Preschoolers discover the science behind the cookie with this engaging science center. Real ginger root, spices, and sensory materials provide a hands-on opportunity for exploration. This activity ties in beautifully with themes of smell, touch, and discovery.

6. Art Easel: Decorate a Gingerbread Man
Decorating gingerbread man cutouts at the art easel is an engaging way to foster creativity. Provide gingerbread outlines on easel paper. Students can paint them and then add glued on decorations such as buttons and glitter once the paint is dry. No room for paint? No worries! Simply provide smaller gingerbread outlines at the art center with a variety of collage materials, markers, crayons, and more. Once the students have finished, cut out the outlines and hang them up for an adorable one-of-a-kind seasonal display.

7. Light Table Preschool Gingerbread Fun
Preschoolers love the light table! Use gingerbread man cutouts and puzzles on a light table to offer a unique sensory and visual experience. Students design their own gingerbread cookies with colorful translucent bits and pieces, or match cookies for visual discrimination skills. Matching and decorating activities enhance fine motor and problem-solving skills. Providing these activities at the light table encourages students to use their vocabulary and social skills in a natural setting as well.

8. Pocket Chart Reading Activity
Reinforce Concept of Word with themed sentence strips. Be sure to use repeating text for most of the words. Students point at each word while saying it aloud. A picture at the end of the strip can give context clues on what the unfamiliar word or words are.

9. Gingerbread Sensory Writing Trays
Sensory writing trays scented with cinnamon make letter formation practice a fragrant delight. Simply add a hearty dash of cinnamon to a salt tray. Provide a cinnamon stick as a “pencil.” Children then trace letters and numbers while enjoying the tactile experience.

10. Felt Board Retelling
There are dozens of great Gingerbread Man book variations out there. Build story comprehension by encouraging students to retell the classic tale on a felt board. The pictured kit is from Rally Felt and includes a copy of the story. For other variations, such as The Gingerbread Girl or Gingerbread Pirates, some teacher creativity is needed. First, copy pages of the book that have each character on them. Cut out the characters and laminate the pieces. Finally, stick a “hard” piece of Velcro to the back of each piece. While not as nice as the pieces from Rally Felt, they’ll do in a pinch!

11. Gingerbread Math: Puzzle Matching
Matching puzzles from the Gingerbread Unit provide an engaging way to practice numbers, shapes, and patterns. Incorporating counting and sorting adds extra learning dimensions to this math center activity.

Gingerbread activities do more than bring holiday fun to the classroom. They help kids use their creativity, explore their senses, and grow in many ways—all while playing! As the classroom fills with the sights, sounds, and smells of gingerbread, learning becomes even more exciting. Try these ideas in the classroom, and enjoy watching the magic happen. The joy of the season is even better when shared!
