Light Table Flower Art

Bring the outdoors inside with light table flowers!

Sometimes, the rain that is so necessary for flowers can make it impossible to play outdoors.  These cheery light table flowers will lift the gloom off of any rainy day, and provide some essential learning skills as well!

Light Table Flowers Skill: Fine Motor Practice

Grasping and maneuvering the bingo chips requires a bit of fine motor muscle work. The translucent bingo chips are thin, which provides an extra challenge. If there is a student with fine motor delay, adapt by adding clear table scatter rocks in bright colors, or demonstrate moving the bingo chips by sliding them instead of picking them up.

Light Table Flowers Skill: Pre-Math

Prompt students to sort by color, create patterns within their design, and count the petals they put on their flowers. Encourage them to count while they line up the pieces – how many did they use to make the stem? The leaves? Additional materials, such as thicker table scatter, invites practice of one-to-one correspondence as the students use the less translucent materials to cover up the bingo chips.

Light Table Flowers Skill: Scientific Learning

There are so many science skills to practice at this learning center! Review color theory as the children layer the pieces. What happens when they layer two of the same color? One of every color?  Invite the students to discuss the parts of the flower (the roots, stem, leaves, and petals) and what each part does. Discuss what a flower needs to grow healthy and strong. Inspire the students to try different flower shapes by adding pictures of flowers from gardening magazines and books. And, as pictured below, always encourage the children to talk about where their creations lead, like perhaps an impromptu conversation about rainbows.
