When teaching preschoolers about famous artists, it is important to have activities beyond the art table to reinforce what they’ve learned. One station most students are drawn to is the light table – making it a perfect place to have some Kusama light table fun!

This is an easy activity that requires very few materials—all items that are regularly found in preschool classrooms. Even the clean-up is a breeze!

Materials needed for the Kusama Light Table Activity
Sometimes, the most engaging activities are the ones that require the least amount of work! The artwork of Yayoi Kusama focuses mainly on dots everywhere. To replicate that on the light table, gather these materials:
- Simple clip art with bold, black lines – printed on transparency paper *
- Translucent bingo chips
- Magnetic wands
- Small containers (to hold the bingo chips)
- Light table
*Even if transparency sheets are unavailable, simple drawings made with a heavy marker on thin paper also work.

Introducing the Kusama Light Table Activity to the Students
First, read a book about Yayoi Kusama to the students. Show them some pictures of her art and discuss it with them. Additionally, introduce the students to hands-on learning by doing the Kusama art project. The Kusama light table activity is a fantastic center to have open for students who finish early or need a quiet activity during free play time.
For the Kusama light table activity, provide small containers of bingo chips in the center of the table sorted by color. Lay out the transparency sheets around the table for students to access. Students place the bingo chips on the drawing to create their Kusama-inspired masterpieces. There is no right or wrong way to create, so the students’ imagination is the limit.

Wrapping Up
One of the best parts about an activity like this is that cleaning up is even fun! With the right kind of bingo chips, students can sweep a magnet wand over their artwork to “erase” their picture and start over. Students can also use the magnet wands to gather the bingo chips when they are finished creating their masterpieces and sort them by color back into the containers.
