These Halloween Writing Trays are so fun, it’s scary! Here are a few easy variations on this budget-friendly spooky letter center!

What you will need:

  • shallow trays or cookie sheets (We repurposed some wooden packaging from some bead sets). Even shoebox lids will work!
  • clothespins
  • base material
  • Seasonal Letter Cards (Print HERE)
  • small manipulatives to form the letters
  • your imagination!

Why Use a Base Material in the Writing Tray?

Small children are still gaining some skills with their fine motor muscles.  Providing a base material keeps their small pieces in place, adds interest, and also allows them to draw the letters in the sand with greater success instead of struggling with a pencil. This way, they can focus on the shape of the letter instead of trying to control a wayward pencil or crayon. It also adds an irresistible sensory component to the activity, which will help children focus.

Base materials do not need to be pricey. The black sand came from the craft store, but you can easily find it online as well. Make your own colored rice or use plain table salt and flour. Adding a witchy finger from the dollar store not only helps students reluctant to touch the material but also makes a nice sharp point for writing!
