Sewing Buttons Fine Motor
We are always looking for new and exciting ways to practice fine motor skills in preschool. Lacing and sewing are super for helping to strengthen those little muscles and improve hand-eye coordination.
The invitation to play at this center was simple: a bowl full of large, colorful buttons, sheets of plastic canvas and lacing cords from a set of lacing cards. To get them started, I laced one cord and button through each sheet.

It takes focus and concentration to get those laces through the buttons.

It also takes some problem solving to discover that the lace has to go through the button and also through the plastic canvas to get it to lay flat.

We were so pleasantly surprised that all of our students — boys and girls — spent quite a bit of time sewing the buttons. There were only 6 sheets of canvas at the center, so a few of the students decided to work together.

This little guy was intent on sewing on the most buttons. He spent a half an hour and used 3 lacing cords until his whole canvas was full. When he was done, he wanted to count how many buttons he sewed. It was more than 30!

Have fun playing and learning with your children today!
