Using Rainbow Stacking Blocks to Support STEAM Education

Representing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, STEAM education is a method of inquiry-based instruction. STEAM learning allows students to build understanding and vocabulary, creatively problem-solve, and reflect upon their learning. While these skills will continue to grow throughout the years, at the preschool level, they can take on a variety of appearances.

S is for Science

Rainbows form when raindrops or a prism separates white light into different wavelengths. Discussions about the weather at the science center are enhanced with hands-on rainbows! Rainbow stacking blocks at the science center demonstrate the different colors. It also reinforces the order in which that those colors occur.

T is for Technology

Using the blocks, offer a prism and a flashlight to the students. By directing the light through the prism, they should be able to create rainbows of their own. Children can compare and contrast the rainbow they create with the rainbow stacking blocks.

E is for Engineering

By putting the blocks in the block center, children are encouraged to use the arcs to create bridges, roads, and tunnels. Toy cars or small balls rolling on the inside and outside edges of the arches are ways to explore cause and effect. Flipping the rainbow upside-down provides lessons in balance.
