Art plays a vital role in a child’s development, allowing them to express themselves, explore their creativity, and develop important skills. Process art, in particular, focuses on the journey of creating art rather than the end result. It encourages children to experiment, make choices, and engage in sensory experiences. This peacock process art is a perfect addition to a unit about birds, zoos, or animals. The results are beautiful!
Introducing the Peacock Process Art
Begin the activity by introducing preschoolers to peacocks. First, ask if any students have seen a peacock before. Next, show them pictures or books that depict these magnificent birds. Discuss the peacock’s vibrant colors, long tails, and distinct feathers. Show students some real peacock feathers purchased at a craft store or online if possible.
Setting Up for Success
From a teacher’s perspective, the best part about process art is how easy it is to set up for success. This peacock process art only requires minimal teacher participation. Provide the students with paper and peacock-colored paints, an assortment of brushes (or “alternative brushes” like cotton swabs, sponges, feathers, or similar items), smocks, and paper. Place the peacock feather or pictures of peacocks on display. Then turn the students loose to create!
After the paint has dried, apply a peacock body to the paper. Add the students’ names, and it’s complete!
