Materials Needed for the Flower Suncatcher Craft
There are a few things to consider when thinking of a preschool art project. Ideally, the process behind the project should be the focus, not just the finished product. By doing this, students gain valuable skills throughout the project and teachers aren’t spending tons of time pre-cutting and preparing identical projects. Children benefit from the freedom to express themselves and see the way their art differs from that of their friends.
For the flower suncatcher project, only a few materials are needed to create this gorgeous spring project.
- Cardstock
- Contact Paper
- Flower Petals
How-To Create Flower Suncatchers
The flower suncatchers are a perfect art project for the spring. Go on an outdoor adventure to collect flower petals, then come inside and create a beautiful masterpiece. It only takes a few steps and a little prep work to make a floral work of art. No flower petals on the ground? Many floral shops will be happy to donate some flowers that are past their prime for the project.
First, cut a circle in the middle of a piece of cardstock. White cardstock works well as it helps the flowers’ colors stand out, but any color will work. Next, attach contact paper over the cardstock, covering the cut-out circle. Turn the page over to reveal the sticky side of the contact paper.
At the art table, lay out the flowers or petals in the middle of the table. Students select flowers and stick them onto the contact paper. There is no required pattern or number of petals needed. The beauty of this project is each flower suncatcher will be unique. Finish by allowing students to write or trace the word “flowers” on the cardstock and have the teacher write their name and date in the bottom corner. Hang the suncatchers in a window or other place that allows natural light to shine through the translucent petals for the full effect.
