There’s something about the crisp fall air that makes people want to get outside. Nothing is better in autumn than collecting things for fall preschool science activities. Who hasn’t found our little ones’ leaves, acorns, and sticks in the bottom of a pocket after a fun time outside?
Fall is a great time to introduce science activities to the classroom with all of the “supplies” nature offers.

$99.00Students will enjoy hands-on SCIENCE CENTERS all year long. Each unit includes a list of supplies for each topic, learning objectives, lesson ideas, as well as photos and activities that students will want to explore again and again! Encourage young learners to ask questions, make observations, and develop scientific thinking skills.
Fall Preschool Science Activities with Found Objects
Starting a fall science center in a preschool classroom is easy after collecting a few supplies from outside. Go on a scavenger hunt and gather a few items for the science center with the class. Alternatively, teachers can find these pieces at the local craft or dollar store if access to nature is limited.
- Acorns
- Leaves
- Pumpkins
- Mums
- Apples
Display these items in a Fall Science Center. Talk about what happened to the leaves and ask where acorns come from. Find more ideas in the Preschool Science Earth and Space Unit, section #3.
Fall Science Activities with Gourds and Pumpkins
Check out the local farmer’s market for tiny gourds and pumpkins for a “Smooth & Bumpy” exploration station. Set up trays for sorting and talk about how the objects feel. Find more ideas and “Smooth/Bumpy” labels in the Preschool Science Properties of Matter, section 3.
Sorting Fall Leaves
Find leaves on a nature walk or pick up a bag of beautiful fall-colored leaves at the local craft store. Place these at the science center with leaf color sort labels for an engaging station of classifying objects.
Observing Spiders
Observing spiders may send some folks running for the door, but spiders are a valuable part of our ecosystem. Create a classroom web with yarn or tape, and let the safe interactions begin! In addition, pick up plastic spiders to inhabit the web for even more fun! Additional ideas can be found in the Preschool Science Life Processes, section 7.
Extending the Learning
There’s never a shortage of fall activities, so bringing the outside in for engaging in scientific learning is always a reward. Here are some more ideas for rounding out autumn classroom planning:
