Band-aids — kids either love ’em or hate ’em! (Personally, they g.r.o.s.s. me out! But I know that my preschoolers love them, so I put on a brave face.) Usually, the kids ask for a band-aid for a little tiny (sometimes invisible) cut. I know that they just really like the novelty of it! So we used that interest and set up this Band Aid Fine Motor Practice center to go along with our Hospital Dramatic Play.
Opening a band-aid takes serious fine motor skills. Look at the way she has to hold the package with her fingers and spread the wrapper apart with her thumbs. Skill!
Pulling the wrapper apart is another tricky skill. Lots of our students struggle with opening their snack packages because the “pulling apart” motion is tricky. Opening a band-aid is a good way to practice!
After the band aid was open, the students needed a place to stick it. I made these easy “My B has a Boo-Boo” sheets and let them decorate the B with the bandages! (Read to the bottom to print your own sheet.)
They loved this activity. I had purchased a club-sized box of band-aids (I think there were 200?!), thinking that it would last me the week with both of my preschool classes. No way! It barely lasted 1 day. They love those band aids!
We even discovered a few “special” patterned varieties in the box. What a treat!
The pictures turned out cute, and the students had a solid 20 minutes of fine motor practice. Any activity like that is a winner in my book.
