Many preschoolers have happy family outings where they go pick a bright, orange pumpkin straight from the farm. Recreate that fun experience with a pumpkin patch dramatic play center! Students will be encouraged to read, write, learn, and play, all while visiting the classroom’s pumpkin patch.
Imagination in Action
Preschool students have incredible imaginations. They can turn a playground into a space station, a sidewalk into an erupting volcano with molten lava, and a table and chairs into a fancy tea with the queen. So it’s no wonder the dramatic play area quickly becomes one of their favorite places in the preschool classroom.
To create a fully immersive dramatic play center, it is important to incorporate real-life items, props, and toys. For a pumpkin patch dramatic play area, bringing in pumpkins and gourds of different shapes and colors is one way to do this. Students can use these items to investigate shapes, textures, weights, colors, and more.
Setting Up the Pumpkin Patch Dramatic Play
Setting up a dramatic play center shouldn’t be overwhelming. The idea is to set up a space for students to pretend, imagine, role-play, socialize, and learn. With just a few new items, students will be begging to return to this area daily.

Pumpkin Patch Dramatic Play
$5.00Go for a pretend field trip to the PUMPKIN PATCH with this dramatic play set– perfect for fall! The signs, labels, and name tags help to create an organized, literacy-rich environment where children will have fun learning through play. This dramatic playset is the perfect accompaniment to the Pumpkin Preschool Unit.
Suggested Items:
- Labels – Labels do more than help organize items at the end of the day. Students begin to understand that words have meaning. Incorporating authentic text in a real-life setting is a great way to encourage reading.
- Role Play Name Tags – Name tags help students who are reluctant to interact in the space or simply don’t understand what they can do in the area. Attached to a lanyard, name tags encourage all students to fully participate in the fun.
- Signs – Separating the area with signs, such as an open/closed sign or a kitchen area, adds dimension to the space. It can create different play areas, which allows more students to interact without everyone being in one space.
- Step-by-Step Directions – Students love to create, and these illustrated step-by-step directions allow them to do so stress-free. Post the signs near the props and watch as students take pride in making a gorgeous pie.
- Pumpkins – What would a pumpkin patch be without them?! Don’t be constrained by toys and pictures, though. Ask for donations from local farmers or invite students to bring in pumpkins of all sizes to fill the space. They can be hauled from the field, sold at the store, weighed and measured at the check-out, and so much more.
- Dress-up Clothes – While a pumpkin patch is exciting, adding dress-up clothes to look the part can only add to the fun. Bring in straw hats, overalls, flannel shirts, boots, and gloves to add to the experience.
- Additional Props – Imagination is the only limit when it comes to props. Providing wagons, pie pans, cash registers, scales, hay bales, and more will certainly make this pumpkin patch a class favorite.
Playing IS Learning!
To the untrained eye, walking into a classroom and seeing kids playing in the dramatic play center may be concerning. Some people might think that they are “just playing,” but a closer look through an educator’s lens shows that learning is taking place!
Literacy Connections
Dramatic play areas are a fantastic way to incorporate environmental literacy. Labels and signs encourage students to make meaning of the text while playing. Additional items, like order forms, receipts, and tickets, support students’ literacy education.
Real-Life Math
Just as literacy can be incorporated into every dramatic play element, so can math! Provide scales to weigh and cloth tape measures to measure the pumpkins. Price lists, order forms, a cash register, and receipts allow students to identify numbers, demonstrate one-to-one correspondence, and begin to practice computation.
Social-Emotional Development
Dramatic play centers offer an amazing opportunity for little learners to practice many social skills. Taking turns and sharing takes practice! And there is no better way to practice these very important skills than through play.
More Pumpkin Fun
The pumpkin patch dramatic play center can be used on its own with nothing missing. But it can get even better! Pair the fun with a unit of study on pumpkins, incorporate additional math skills with pumpkin counting mats, and practice sight word recognition with a pumpkin pocket chart activity. Stock the student library with books about pumpkins or use them to read aloud during circle time. No matter the segment of the day or center in the classroom, cross-referencing themes with the pumpkin patch dramatic play center is a great way to enhance learning.
