Build up some fun with this free preschool construction theme video series! Enjoy five free circle time lessons featuring favorite books with a preschool construction theme like A Little Excavator, and Goodnight Goodnite Construction Site. Each 30-minute video is led by Ms. Jamie and her puppet Betsy the Blackbird and includes stories, songs, and daily activities. It’s a fun and hands-on way to build early skills while learning all about the world of construction.
design it
Get inspired by architecture in this creative lesson. Kids will check out real tools and blueprints before designing their own “Not a Box” shape creations. They’ll identify shapes in the Blueprints Carpet Game and listen to Boxitects by Kim Smith. For the home project, they’ll make a blueprint using blue paper, white paint, and cookie cutters.
tools of the trade
Time to learn about the handy tools that help us build and fix! Kids will check out a real toolbox, sing “This is the Way,” and test their memory with a tool tray game. They’ll keep the beat with “Johnny Hammers” and enjoy When Grandpa Gives You a Toolbox by Jamie L.B. Dennihan. At home, they can trace real tools on paper for a fun matching activity.
build it
Explore the world of building with photos of unique houses from around the globe. Children will listen to “The Three Little Pigs” story using flannel pieces, practice creating AB and ABC patterns with straw, stick, and brick “houses,” and hear When I Build With Blocks by Niki Alling. For the home project, they’ll work with a partner to recreate block structures using matching sets.
trucks
Get ready to learn all about big machines with photos of real construction vehicles. Kids will sing “Around the Construction Site,” roll dice for a dump truck counting game, and practice logical thinking with a vehicle grid game. The read-aloud is A Little Excavator by Anna Dewdney. At home, they can drive toy trucks through paint to make bold, colorful tracks on paper.
construction site
Step into the world of busy builders with Betsy Visits a Construction Site to kick things off. Kids will sing about what they see on-site, practice early reading with “I See the ___” sentence work, and enjoy Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker. For the home project, set up a sensory construction bin with dirt, sand, rocks, and toy vehicles for hours of imaginative play.
