Digraph activities don’t have to be difficult! Helping young learners identify digraph sounds is easy with interactive file folder games. Students experience digraphs in a fun and engaging way that keeps them learning and playing.

What are File Folder Games?

File Folder Games are a quick and easy way to reinforce various skills. They are perfect for tiny doses of independent seat work or a morning arrival activity. File folder games are flexible enough that each student can work on whatever skill they need. Letter identification, initial sounds, rhyming, counting, number recognition, and sorting are examples of this.

Supplies Needed

  • manilla file folders
  • cover page
  • inside pages
  • student work pieces

How-To Create a File Folder Game

  1. Print the parts and cut them out.
  2. Glue the cover to front of file folder.
  3. Cut, and glue inside pages to the inside of the file folder
  4. Cut, mat, and laminate game pieces.
  5. Attach an envelope to the back of the file folder to hold the game pieces when not in use.

Digraph Activities using File Folders

After practicing single letter beginning sounds, students can progress to identifying words starting with different digraphs. A digraph is simply two letters that make one sound. When presented in a meaningful way, such as within the context of a story or paired with a corresponding picture, students begin to understand these letter pairs as one sound.

Scaffolding is building off what students already know. Start by working with single letter beginning sounds. Next, reinforce this skill by incorporating words that begin with each of the letters in the digraph. For example, when introducing the “th” sound, include words that begin with the sounds for /t/ and /h/ independent of one another. By doing this, students begin to understand the special relationship the letters have when paired together.

These folder game digraph activities include five reproducible pages for additional independent practice. This activity is quick and easy to assemble, and the worksheets are differentiated based on the students’ needs.
