Art doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful. That’s why this Kandinsky art for preschoolers is perfect. It’s low-mess, low-prep, and practically fail-proof. It also looks gorgeous when displayed. Every student walks away from this art project feeling successful—that’s the real goal!

Introducing Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky was best known for his abstract circles. Start with a shapes review, with a focus on circles. Next, read the book Meet Wassily Kandinsky or The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art by Barb Rosenstock. Explain the meaning of “concentric circles” (one circle inside another) to the students and point out the example. Don’t be surprised if the children call him “Silly” Kandinsky!

Materials Needed for Kandinsky Art for Preschoolers
This Kandinsky art project is no mess, which is fantastic for busy teachers! Start by gathering these materials:
- Circle cutouts. We used wood, but cardboard or cardstock would work, too.
- Kwik-Sticks paint sticks
- hot glue gun (teacher only!)
- Ribbon

Making the Kandinsky Art for Preschoolers

This Kandinsky art for preschoolers couldn’t be simpler! First, students simply use the Kwik Sticks to color concentric circles on the circle cutout. Most students prefer to start in the center and work outward, but either way works great. There is no need to wait for the art to dry—the Kwik Sticks dry instantly! Finally, the teacher uses a tiny bit of hot glue to affix a ribbon or loop of string to the back of the circle for hanging.
Displaying the Finished Works

Display the student artwork along with a few Kandinsky resources from the lesson. Hang the circles by the ribbon loops from a Create-It-Station or a bookshelf. Another display option is to skip the ribbon loop, mount each circle onto a contrasting colored paper square, and place them all together to imitate the artist’s original work. This is a beautiful and colorful showpiece in the classroom or on any display.
After the Lesson
Continue the learning after the lesson has ended! Set up a table or center with this free printable and some crayons or markers. Add a poster or printout of Kandinsky’s art and a book about Kandinsky. Students need no extra encouragement to make more art to take home!
