Dig into the tasty world of nutrition with these 5 free Food Groups lessons for preschoolers! This circle time playlist explores fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, protein, and even a sweet treat or two. Each 30-minute video is led by Ms. Jamie and her puppet Betsy the Blackbird and includes songs, stories, and simple activities about making healthy food choices. A colorful and fun way to help young children learn what fuels their bodies and keeps them strong.
fruits
Let’s dive into all the colorful, tasty fruits we enjoy every day. We’ll use flannel board visuals to talk about healthy choices and sing the “I am Hungry” song with plastic fruits. Kids will play the “Strawberry” shape game to build early math skills. At home, they’ll cut open a real piece of fruit to see what’s inside. We’ll finish with Little Mouse and the Red Ripe Strawberry by Don & Audrey Wood.
vegetables
We’re learning all about healthy, crunchy vegetables. We’ll use flannel board visuals to talk about different veggies and sing “The Veggie Song” with plastic vegetable props. Kids will test their memory with a fun vegetable tray game. For the home project, they’ll try planting vegetable scraps. We’ll end with I Will Never Not Eat a Tomato by Lauren Child.
grains
We’ll be learning all about grains like oatmeal, rice, and pasta with colorful flannel board visuals and Betsy Goes to the Grocery Store. Kids will play the “Popcorn” carpet game to practice color recognition. For a hands-on project, they’ll string a necklace with Cheerios or pasta. We’ll finish with Llama Llama Mad at Mama for a fun read-aloud.
dairy & Protein
Let’s learn about dairy and protein foods that help us grow strong. We’ll use flannel board visuals and recite the “Sandwich” poem with fun food props. Kids will listen carefully to solve food riddles. At home, they can talk about their favorite sandwich fillings. We’ll finish with Pete the Cat: Pete’s Big Lunch by James Dean.
sweets & treats
Today, we’re talking about sweets and treats and making healthy choices. We’ll sing the “Healthy Choices” song with picture prompts and play a memory tray game to remember different treats. At home, kids can try drawing their own colorful donut. We’ll end with Please Mr. Panda by Steve Antony, a story about manners and sharing.
