Our Friend, the Dentist
Many people have a lot of anxiety about visiting the dentist. Children who do not know what to expect are certainly counted in that number! That is why it is crucial to help students become familiar with the setting and what will happen when they are in their appointment. Sing this cute song about what a dentist does. You can print a FREE version of the song HERE.
The Truth about the Tooth!
Young students grasp concepts more quickly when they can touch and explore objects related to the topic. Many local dentists are happy to donate dental health kits or even come in to speak with students. The local dollar store usually has inexpensive dental items, toothbrushes, floss, and toothpaste as well. Melissa and Doug also have an awesome dentist playset!
Use these items to make a memory tray!
- Select 5-6 objects and place them on a tray.
- Count the objects and talk about each one.
- Ask students to cover their eyes while you remove 1 of the objects.
- Can they figure out which thing is missing?
X-Ray Fun
Students love carpet games, and this x-ray carpet game is no “x-ception!” Children take turns guessing which camera the x-ray is hiding behind. Carpet games are an excellent way of practicing a skill, like color identification, while also promoting cooperation, self-awareness, and patience.

Toothbrush writing tray
Set up a quick writing center using a shallow tray and flour or salt as the base. Use new toothbrushes to make shapes or write letters in the tray. The children love how quickly they can “reset” their writing tray with a little shake.
This Sensory Bin is “Toothfully” Fun!
A sensory bin is a fantastic way to practice letter identification skills along with fine motor skills! Hide the uppercase and lowercase letters in a bin filled with ABC noodles or rice. Students can explore the material while searching for matching letters.
Here is more information on sensory table activities and the benefits of sensory play.
Another option is to attach a magnet to the back of these alphabet tooth puzzles. Put them onto a magnet board for a vertical center activity!
