Typewriters might be unfamiliar to today’s children. However, after reading Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, they will want to experience the fun of clicking and clacking away on these ancestors of computer keyboards. Setting up a dramatic play area with the tools to recreate the story encourages students to practice their letter recognition, imaginative play, and more!
Start by reading Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type during circle time, then set up a fun pretend play activity! It’s simple, and you only need a typewriter, paper, and costumes. Children will love clicking on the keys while creating notes like the cows, chickens, and ducks from the adorable story.

Fine Motor Opportunity with Click Clack Moo
Children love typing on a typewriter! Adding one to the classroom gives engaging opportunities for preschoolers to practice their fine motor and letter recognition skills. If a typewriter is unavailable, ask families for a donation. Sometimes libraries have them available for loan, or there might be one at the local thrift store. Of course, an old laptop or computer keyboard is a great alternative, but it won’t print if it’s not hooked up to a printer. Set up pre-printed notes like the ones featured in the book Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type and display them near the typewriter. Students will have fun matching the note to the page in the story.
Dressing the Part
Dressing up is an essential part of childhood. It creates opportunities for imagination as well as occasions for problem-solving and self-regulating. Add these costumes with the typewriter for engaging play:
- cow onesies or cow print shirts
- overalls
- farmer’s hat
- feather boa (for the chickens!)
