In my small, private preschool, there is no nurse; I’m it! So, we have a complete first aid kit handy for any injuries that may come up. Please make sure to check the rules and regulations where you live, to be sure that you are permitted to administer first aid. Also, please be aware that any injury above the shoulders is serious and should be treated by an expert. I’m not a medic, just a teacher, so this is definitely not medical advice, but a handy reference for what you should have in your classroom first aid kit.

- Bandaids – If you only keep 1 thing in your kit, it should be bandaids. Kids scrape their knees, get paper cuts, have hangnails, and scratch their scabs off. Teachers need lots of bandaids in various sizes and shapes!
- Exam Gloves – If there are bodily fluids involved, put on the gloves every time! You can get a box of 50 to keep in your room at any pharmacy or big box store.
- Antiseptic Pads – These little wipes are perfect for cleaning off a playground cut before you put the bandaid on.
- Gauze Pads – For playground scrapes that are too big for a bandaid.
- Adhesive Tape – To hold that gauze on while you send the kiddo to the nurse.
- Tweezers – These are handy for splinters.
- Ice packs – If you have a freezer available, you can keep reusable packs in there. I like these gel packs because they don’t get too hard. If a freezer is not an option, try these single use cold packs.
- Itch Cream or After-Bite Ointment – For mosquito bites and other itchy skin. Be sure to check to see if you are permitted to apply topical creams.
- Antibiotic Cream – Again, check to be sure that you are allowed to use it first. This cream is perfect for applying to small cuts and scrapes.
- Digital Thermometer – If you are in a school with a health clinic, this one might not be necessary. In a preschool setting, though, we use it all the time. I love this forehead thermometer because it is quick and doesn’t spread germs!
