Banana Bread Recipe for Kids

Young children love to cook! Cooking is a great way to introduce early math skills (counting, weight, measurement, time) and early literacy skills (following step-by-step directions). Recipe & Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 3 ripe bananans
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • spray oil
  • bowl
  • mixing spoons
  • muffin pan
  • measuring cups and spoons

Step 1

Students mix the butter and sugar together.

Students crack the eggs into a small bowl and are responsible for removing any shell fragments. Add the eggs to the sugar and butter. Always wash your hands after handling eggs.

Step 3

Add the buttermilk. Help students measure liquid ingredients by placing a rubber band at the correct amount. This will help children be more independent when pouring.

Students work together to slice and mash the bananas. This activity is excellent for hand-eye coordination. Add the bananas and vanilla to the bowl.

Add the dry ingredients and bananas and take turns stirring the bowl. Count to 10 as each student takes a turn to stir, then pass on to the next child to stir.

Pour batter into a greased loaf pan or muffin pan. Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes.
